The Definition for Rate:
Rate is when you are comparing twosets of data that are measured in different units.

The Definition for Ratio:
Ratio is when you are comparing two sets of data from the same unit.

What is the difference between ratio and rate?
Rate compares two different units while ratio compares data from the same unit.

Question 4 from P60.

4. Determine the unit rate in each situation.

The mistakes I made on my test was I didn't check my answers correctly another mistake was I didn't explain my answers properly.

The two questions I had trouble with is question 15 and 16, In question 15 you had to write the ratio's in lowest terms? The second question was,You have a bag with one white ball, six red balls, eight green balls, and three purple balls in lowest terms, what is the ratio of red balls to the whole bag of balls?

What I can do in the future for my test are working harder, studying a bit more, and reading the questions carefully.

sorry its late.
Four4'sQuestion: How is 4/4 the same as 4÷4?

Answer:4/4 is exactly the same as 4÷4.
The symbols "/" and "÷" represent the same thing, which is divide.
But "/" is most likely used when dealing with fractions.
But the proper way to represent it is using "÷" because some people can mistake "/" for a fraction!

Question : Explain how 4/4 is the same as 4÷4 .

Answer :
The symbols "/" and "÷" both mean the same thing. The symbol "/" is most used with fractions. Division is a big part in fractions so i guess its why its okay to use "/" when dividing numbers. The other symbol "÷" is just the more common and it means the same thing as the other symbol.

Vanessa's BOB 2 on ratios

Heeey sorry about my late post for BOB2 on ratios but here it is ....

What were some mistakes you did on your tests ?
A mistake that I did on my tests is that i didn't simplify it ( lowest terms ). Another mistake I did on my tests is not showing enough work, so I got less than what i should have gotten.
What I can do to improve my future tests...
I can study hard and read the questions slowly.

Questions...

1) A picture frame has a width to length ratio of 5:7 . If the width of the photo is 9cm, the length of the photo is ?
a) 11cm b) 12.6cm c) 14cm d) 16cm

The other question is just simplifying the ratio.

Hello!

Hello everybody!

This is Kim, your student mentor! Hope you all are having a great week!

I'm just wondering, what can I do to help you in this class? Do you have any ideas?

The site you guys have here looks pretty cool. I think math would have been easier for me in grade 8 if I had a cool website like this to keep notes organized. Do you guys like having class like this too?

Do you have any questions for me? I was thinking that I better make an effort to make myself known as me, instead of the crazy person who posts pirate videos.

Speaking of which, here is another one. Tell me what you think.

Kathleen's BOB

- 3 things I now know about graphing :

A
(BAR) GRAPH needs to have the following :
  • a title
  • x and y axis
  • scale * intervals must be same amount going up *
  • labels for both axis
  • colours are optional .

- advantages for different graphs :

Bar Graphs - are best for comparing data.

Circle Graph
- are best for comparing categories when using percents.

Pictograph
- are best for comparing categories that can easily be counted using symbols.

Line Graph
- are best for showing changes of data over time.

Double Bar Graph
- are best for comparing two sets of data.

- misrepresenting the data :

  • Distorting a bar graph - making other bars looks different form the others makes you focus on that bar .
  • Colours - if you change a colour of a bar , it makes the other bars looks like it is not important.
  • Breaks - shorten the y-axis' appearance

Well the first mistake I did was not putting the questions in there lowest terms.

The second mistake I did was on the percent with the food.

The third mistake I made was not showing my work on the last question.

I will remember what to do in the future tests by reading the question and taking some time to understand it so I could get the correct answer.

2. Rewrite 2 questions that gave you difficulty with different numbers.

Michelle's BOB2 Ratio for October 25, 2009

1. Some of the mistakes I made on my test:

On one of the questions I wasn't sure if I should answer it in lowest terms. It didn't say to, so I just put 2:4. Next time I will remember, that the best answer is in lowest terms if there is a choice for it.

The question with 84 students, and finding out the percent, I got mixed up there. I didn't know how to get the percent. But some how on the calculator I ended up pressing numbers to find out the "percent." Since it said to round to one decimal place, I thought I had gotten the right number because I could round18. 4444 etc ( or something like that.) I know now that when you want to find the percent you can just compare the fractions, then divide the fraction to get the decimal.

Also in another question where you had to compare which two teams had the same amount of wins and lost, I didn't show my work because it didn't say to, or I forgot that the teacher said showing your work will give you the marks. I just put 5:4 and a sentence saying they were equivalent to each other. For the next text, I will try to show my work so I can earn those marks.

The questions that gave me difficulty were :

In a group of 84 students surveyed, the ratio of student preference is 7 oatmeal eaters to 4 granola eaters to 3 toasted O eaters. Of the 84 students, how many prefer oatmeal and how many preferred granola?
I got this question right, but in order for you to answer the question, you had to find what number THAT will get you to 84 if you times THAT number by all the " different eaters." Then add it up, and it should give you 84.

A stable has 39 passengers on it as it starts its run. At the first stop 12 passengers get off and 18 passengers get on. What is the ratio of the number of passengers who were on the train when it left the first station? Express your answer in lowest terms.
a) 2:3 b) 13:15 c) 18:12 d) 27:39
This question was hard for me, because the way they put the question got me very confused. I had to read it over and over until I finally found an answer that was on one of the choices. ( I got it right. ) I had to add and subtract numbers, then eventually I had divide to find the lowest terms.

Equivalent fractions are just equal fractions. So to make an equivalent fractions, whatever you do to one side, you just have to do to the other side.

For example, this picture shows the number of green Dots, to the number of total Dots. So to get an equivalent fraction, i just multiplied both the green and total by 2. You may also divide the two different numbers if you like.

Here are 3 questions you guys could answer:

What is the ratio for mixed colored crayons to total crayons?

What would the percent be, for
 blue crayons to green crayons?

What would the decimal be, fo
pink crayons to total crayons?

WRITING THE RATIO IN 4 DIFFERENT WAYS : ( fraction, percent, decimal ratio notation )

The ratio I chose is 1 : 2

FRACTION :

The way you write it in a fraction is that you just put the 1 on the numerator and the 2 on the denominator.

DECIMAL :

All you have to do is divide 1 to 2. So all the line means is to divide the numerator from the denominator. 1 / 2 = 0.5

PERCENTAGE :

To find the percentage you just need to use the decimal form. In this case, the decimal is 0.5. In other words that is 50 so there is your answer. 50 %

RATIO NOTATION :

All ratio notation means is the colon in the ratio. 1 : 2 . The colon between the 1 and 2 is ratio notation.

EQUIVILANT RATIOS :

I will choose the ratio 2 : 22 for this question.

Equivilant ratios for 2 : 22 :

- 1 : 11 ( ÷ 2 )
- 4 : 44 ( x 2 )
- 8 : 88 ( x 4 )

Thats how you simplify 2 : 22 in diffrent ways.

MY QUESTIONS :

1. Why do we use ratios? Explain

2. What is the part to part to part ratio for
pink to orange to black ?

3. How do ratios help us in real life?

How to make equivalent ratios

Equivalent ratios are the same as fractions written sideways. It's written differently but means the same thing. For example, 2 : 4 is the same as 2 : 4. Whatever you do on one side, you do it on the other side.

1. True or False. A part to part ratio compares one part of a group to the whole group.
2. simplify 148 : 111.
3. If there are 3 stars and 1 moon. What should I write if I'm comparing moon to stars?Explain why.
