Riemer's Surface Area Growing Post

RECTANGULAR PRISM

FRONT: TOP: SIDE:
a=lxw a=lxw a=lxw
a=4x4 a=4x2 a=4x2
a=8cm2 a=8cm2 a=8cm2

Now since you have the caculations for each side, you need to caculate the TSA.

TSA=FRONT+FRONT+TOP+TOP+SIDE+SIDE
= 8 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 16 + 16
= 64 cm2

TRIANGULAR PRISM

a= b x h / 2
a= 7 x 5 / 2
a= 17.5 cm2

a= l x w
a= 5 x 2
a= 10 cm2

a= l x w
a= 2 x 6
a= 12 cm2

a= l x w
a= 2 x 6
a= 12 cm2

Since you have all the caculations for this rectangular prism, caculate the TSA.

TSA= 10 + 12 + 12 + 17.5 + 17.5
=69cm2

CYLINDER

C=pi x diameter
C=3.14x4
C=12.56

area=pi r2
area=3.14x2x2
area=12.56

lxw=area
12.56x12.56=area
157.75=area

Now you caculate the TSA for this cylinder. If you don't know what TSA stands for, it stands for Total Surface Area.

TSA=Circle+Circle+Rectangle
=12.56+12.56+157.75
= 182.87cm2

Riemer's scribepost for February 2, 2010

I am doing the question 5 and 9.

5) Ravi purchased 3 DVDs for $19.99 each. Find the total cost of the DVDs including 5% GST and 6% PST.

I rounded 19.99 to 20 because its an easier number to work with if you know what im saying ;)

Since Ravi bought 3 DVDs, I multiplied 20 by 3 which is 60 if you dont know how to mutiply.

After that I found 10% by dividing 100 by
                                                                          10.

I found 1% by dividing 10 by 10.

Then the taxes. 5% GST and 6% PST, I added them together which makes 11%.

After all these caculations, i added them all together.

The cost of the DVDs would be $66.60 :)

9. Arjay was thinking of buying a car worth $ 23 000, but delayed purchasing the car for a year. During the year, the cost of the car increased by 3.2%.

a) What was the price of the car when Arjay purchased it?

I found 10% by dividing by 10.

I found 1% by divding by 10 again.

I divided by 10 one more time to get 0.1% and times by 32 to get 3.2%

The price would be $23,736.00

b) What was the total cost of the car including 5% GST and 5% PST?

GST and PST = 5% + 5% = 10%
How to get = 10% I divided 100 by 10
The price with all the taxes and the current price would be $26,036.00

Question # 12 pg. 105

The hypotenuse of the triangle cuts the    circle in half. What is the diameter of
the circle? Express your answer to the
nearest tenth of a centimetre.

                                               a²+b²=c²
                                               7²+5²=c²
                                               (7x7)+(5x5)=c²
                                               49+25=c²
                                               √74=√c²
                                               8.6=c²

How I stopped an Alien Invasion using Proportion !

spaceball.gif

When Aldrine, Emmanuel, Josh, Argie and I was going long driving to California, we got stopped by very scary aliens in the mountains of Utah.

 They said in some sort of language that they wouldn't let us through unless we would answer 3 questions. I don't know how but Emmanuel knew what they were talking about. Thats how I know what they said.

The questions were:

Delia

was paid $35 for 5 hours of babysitting. How much should she
receive for 3 hours? Use a unit rate to find the
 answer.

David can saw alog into 3 pieces in 7 minutes. If he continous sawing at a constantrate. how long would it take him to saw a similar log into 6 pieces?

A small gear turns 18 times in the same time a large gear turns 4 times. How many times will the large gear turn if the small gear turns 54 times? Draw a diagram to help set up a proportion and solve the problem.

Riemer Munoz's Pay it Forward !

What is Pay It Forward?

I think that we should help the world become a better place by giving homeless people money or give them food. I can also make a difference in the world by standing up to bullies. You should tell a teacher if someone is bullying you or stand up to them yourself by saying stop it or walk away from them. Do some good deeds you can do are chores, help around the house without being asked, and help people with things.

What was your Pay It forward act of kindness?

What we did for our act of kindness was donating our small clothes to the salvation army. Justin, Noel and I went to Salvation Army. When we went in there with alot of bags the workers said '' Oh, Thank you very Much''. They also said Merry Christmas. We did our act of kindness on December 8, 2009. We chose this activity because we had alot outgrown clothes and we didn't know who to give it to. So we gave it to the salvation army.

How did your act of kindness go?

To me, our act of kindness went very well. I felt really proud of myself when I put the bags full of clothes in the bin. The people working there and the manager were very thankful and one of them took a picture with us. When Noel, Justin and I went in with alot of bags, the lady at the counter opened her mouth really big and I think she gasped.

Why is the idea of Pay it Forward important?

I think that the idea of Pay it Forward is important because we can help every human being on what they need. I think that we made a difference in the world because Justin, Noel, and I donated clothes to salvation army and now most kids will have the clothes they need to keep warm in the winter. They can also be good looking :) An example is a project that my classmates did. Jeric, Elijah, Eman, Sierra, and Kamille went around the school presenting a charity called Koats For Kids. Koats For Kids is a really great example because we have donate our coats that we have grown out of.That is just like us but we are donating clothes not coats. That is why Paying it Forward is very important in my opinon.

Question 21

Kate is going to put a patio in her backyard. The patio stones she is using each have an area of 1 m2. She has created the rectangular design shown.

a)What is the area of the patio?

The area of the patio is 56m.

14 x 4 = 56

b) What are the dimensions of another rectangular patio she could build with the same area?

Another rectangular patio she could build with the same area is 8 x 7.

8 x 7 = 56

c) Kate decides to make a patio with the same area but she wants it to be a square with whole number side lengths. Is this possible? Explain your reasoning.

I think that this isn't possible because it has a decimal and 56 is not a perfect square.

Question 25

A square digital photo on the computer has an area of 144 cm2.

a) What is the side length of the photo?

b) The photo is enlarged so that the side length is now 36 cm. What is the area of the enlarged photo?

36 x 36 = 1296 squared

c) How many times as large as the original area is the enlarged area? that it is not a perfect square.

riemer's rate growing post

PART 2 ! :)

Ratio:where you poop then compare two quantities measured in the same unit
Rate:where you poop then compare two quantities measured in different units

The difference between ugly ratio and rate is that ratio compares two quantities are measured in the same unit and rate compares two quantities measured in different units.

Determine the unit rate in each situation.

a) An orca swims 110 km in 2 h.
55/hour

b) A Canada goose flies 800 km in 12.5 h.
19.3/hour

c) Cathy plants 45 daffodils in 30 min.
1.5/mins.

Trevour rode his mountaion bike 84 km in 3 hours. Jillian rode her mountain bike 70 km in 2.5 hours. Who is the faster cyclist ?. How do you know ?

Trevour: divide each side by 3 which then gives you 28 km/h.
Jillian: divide each side by 2.5 which gets you the same answer 28 km/h.

They are both going the same speed, that means that neither cyclists are faster.

PART 2 ! :)

What would the recipe look like if it had to serve 10 people? Show your calculations.

-ground beef - 0.5 x 2.5 = 1.25 lb
-medium onion, diced - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5
-stalk celery finely diced - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5
-clove garlic, minced - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5
-canned tomatoes, chopped - 14 x 2.5 = 35 oz
-can tomato paste - 0.5 x 2.5 = 1.25
-parsley - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5 tsp
-basil - 1.5 x 2.5 = 3.75 tsp
-oregano - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5 tsp
-sugar - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5 tsp
-Worcestershire Sauce - 0.5 x 2.5 = 1.25 tsp
-seasoning salt - 0.5 x 2.5 = 1.25 tsp
-bay leaf - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5

I just divided poop 10 by 4 .

What would the recipe look like if you had to only serve 1 person? Show your calculations.

ground beef - 1.25 ÷ 10 = 0.125 lb
medium onion, diced - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25
stalk celery finely diced - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25
clove garlic, minced - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25
canned tomatoes, chopped - 35 ÷ 10 = 3.5 oz
can tomato paste - 1.25 ÷ 10 = 0.125
parsley - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25 tsp
basil - 3.75 ÷ 10 = 0.375 tsp
oregano - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25 tsp
sugar - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25 tsp
Worcestershire Sauce - 1.25 ÷ 10 = 0.125 tsp
seasoning salt - 1.25 ÷ 10 = 0.125 tsp
bay leaf - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25

Equivalent fractions are just equal fractions. So to make an equivalent fractions, whatever you do to one side, you just have to do to the other side.

For example, this picture shows the number of green Dots, to the number of total Dots. So to get an equivalent fraction, i just multiplied both the green and total by 2. You may also divide the two different numbers if you like.

Here are 3 questions you guys could answer:

What is the ratio for mixed colored crayons to total crayons?

What would the percent be, for
 blue crayons to green crayons?

What would the decimal be, fo
r pink crayons to total crayons?
