Michelle's 2 Minutes To Make A Difference Final Reflection

1. Google Docs Presentation

Poverty in the Philippines, Version 1 :

Poverty in the Philippines, Final Cut :

2.We made a few changes between the first and final cut of our movie like, adding an interview, and trying to match the pictures with the words we said in the script. Also we re-recorded our voices, which sounded 'better' than the first time.

The students comments were a bit help to us, but also the woman who judged our first version helped too. They both said to slow down the credits and to redo the voices so its a lot clearer. The lady said to add more details, and also listed some interviews we could use.

3.We found our expert, from the few places the lady gave us. Also April contacted her, and found the number we could use to call. We called red cross, and they kept switching us to " Jennifer Monttebruno " who wouldn't answer her phone.

The three important points that we added to our movie from the expert was, where ever we are in the world, we are able to see the people who need our help. She also said that, in Canada we have strong agencies that would help us. In the Philippines they have low incomes, and areas that suffer from conflicts. Another thing she mentioned was, the Philippines goes through a lot of strong natural disasters.

I learned from our expert that we shouldn't call them victims since they are just survivors.

6. I thinks our greatest success in the project, was our interview. I thought it sounded professional, like we found a great person who really knew what she was talking about.

The skills I may take with me and use in the future, would probably be using the movie maker.

7. The most frustrating thing to make the movie, was actually putting the pieces together so it'd fit the interview. Also timing the interview, and pictures right. Even the interview itself, was hard to get, because I tried contacting by email but there inbox was full. The P.C.C.M. wouldn't answer their phone no matter how many times we called. We figured to just find a different interviewer last minute and add it to our final version.

The strategies I should have used to become successful would be time management. There wasn't really a strategy we used, but knowing we had this much time left we had to use our time wisely to get the job done.

8. I think this project is important the the Grade 8 students because it makes you think about other people in the world who are struggling. You may think that you have a bad life, but there is also someone out there who doesn't have a home, or is starving. We need to realize that we are lucky to have homes, and other things we don't really need. The video we made, help others to see their point of view, and want the need to help!

9. In the future I will make a difference by helping out in the world, instead of throwing things away. My family can donate to our relatives in the Philippines who need help, whether it is clothes, money, or food. Also we need to help not just the people in the world, but the planet itself. My family recycles so we could reuse things, and they also don't like whats been going on with the environment so I'll encourage them to also, save energy.

Michelle's Surface Area Growing Post

After you draw the net, you do the formula for the square :
a = l x w
8cm2 =4 x 2
8cm2 =2 x 4
16cm2 =4 x 4

TSA= 8 + 8 + 8 + 8 + 16 + 16
= 64 cm2

formula for triangle :
a = b x h / 2
a = 7 x 4 / 2
a = 28 / 2
a = 14 mm2

a= l x w
21 mm2 = 3 x 7
24mm2 = 3 x 8
12mm2 = 3 x 4

TSA = 14 + 14+ 21 + 24 + 12
=85 mm2

To find the radius of the circle you use :
r = d /2
r = 8 / 2
r = 4 cm

To find the circumference of a circle you use :
c = 3.14 x d
c = 3.14 x 8
c = 25.12 cm

To find the area of a circle :
a = 3.14 x r x r
a = 3.14 x 4 x 4
a = 50. 24 cm2

To find the lateral area of the square :
L.A = l x w (circumference of the circle)
L.A = 9 x 25.12
L.A = 226.08 cm2

TSA = circle + circle + L.A
= 50. 24 + 50. 24 + 226.08
= 326.56cm 2

Michelle's Percent Scribe for February 3, 2010

4.99 + 4.99 + 3.99 + 19.99 = 33.96
( add all the items together, to get the total )

33.96 x 1.12 = 38.04
Then you find 12% of 33.96. I did it the easier way and added the taxes and the 100 % together.

The reduced price in the second week is $ 38.25 .

For example if the item cost $35 plus tax. ( 12 % )
You could just combine the 100and the % 12 % to get 112 %. Then divide by 100 to get 1.12.
After : 35 x 1.12 = $39.20

( That's the easiest way I'd do it .)

Question 6

6. You are asked to check the design plans for a baseball diamond. Is the triangle a right triangle? Explain.

a² + b² = c²
27
² + 27² = 37.1²
(27 x 27) + (27 x 27) = 37.1
²
729 + 729 = 37.1 ²
1458 = 37.1 ²

37.1 x 37.1 =1376.41

√1458 = 38.18m
√1376.41= 37.1m

It is not a right triangle because the distance between home and second base is 37.1m and isn't 38.2m.

( I wasn't sure how to show my work , so sorry. )

Michelle's Scribepost for December 14, 2009

Question 12.

(You add the two legs to find the hypotenuse,or the Pythagorean Relationship?)

a) 20 cm squared + 32 cm squared = 52 cm squared

b) 100 mm squared + 576 mm squared = 676 mm squared

c) 90 cm squared - 25 cm squared = 65 cm squared
(You minus the 2 numbers because your trying to find the other "leg" instead of finding the hypotenuse. I know this because the opposite side of the right angle is the hypotenuse, not the leg.)

d) 12 cm squared + 12 cm squared = 24 cm squared

Questions from the Homework Book.

List the perfect squares immediately BEFORE and AFTER the whole number.

Martina's painting is on a square canvas with an area of 45cm squared. She needs to buy a frame for the painting. Estimate the square's side length to one decimal place. Show your work.
(6.7 x 6.7 =44.89) Is close to 45, since I rounded one decimal place.

Branden's new game board has 225 squares. All of the small squares form one large square. Ho
w many small squares are along one side? Show your work.

( 15 x 15 = 225 ) There were 15 small squares along one side of the game board.

Michelle's Pay It Forward

Part 1- What does Pay It Forward mean to you?
I think what pay it forward means to me is that if a 12 year old kid could "change the world", just by making a small difference then, I think everyone can help even if its little by little. If we were to help people out just how that little kid did good deeds to people, and in return they'd do the same. I think we could make a difference in the world. Also if something negative is going on in a person's life you should try helping them instead of just leaving them hanging there. If people were doing good deeds, probably their life wouldn't end so bad in the future. What I'm trying to say is that young or old you can do something to change someones life or even help them. You could start off with just smiles, then start thinking of something big.

Part 2-
What was your Pay It Forward act of kindness?
With Sierra, and Kathleen our Pay It Forward act of kindness was handing out Christmas cards to people, and also sticking them on their wind shields.

Why did you choose this activity?

Because it seemed like a fun thing to do, and also its nice to see people smiling at you for giving them something and your just a complete stranger to them.

Who did you help?

We didn't exactly help anyone, but we made them smile.

What did you do?

We handed out Christmas cards saying "to have a safe drive home" and to pay it forward by trying to make someone else smile too. Also there were candy canes on the envelope.

When did you do your act of kindness?
We did our act of kindness at the volleyball provincials.
(see sierra for the video)

Part 3-
How did your act of kindness go?
Our act of kindness went well for most of it. Except when people thought we were going to poison them (or something) because there was a candy cane on it.

What happened?

Well some people were kind enough to accept the cards. Other people just rejected us because we were kids, and we were recording it and they probably thought we were giving something as a joke.

How did you feel?

I felt good after the people took our cards. (Even though after we were done recording it they tried giving it back, but we explained it was theirs to keep.) Also it was nice to see one father enjoying our candy cane, by putting it on as an earing and talking about it to others.

How did the person or people react?
Some people were really happy, you could just tell by their facial expression. Also that one girl, who used to go to Sargent was really thoughtful for baking cookies and rice krispies for the junior girls team.

Did you ask the person or people to Pay It Forward?
Yes, we asked the people to Pay It Forward, it even said on the cards.

How did they react to your request?
The people gave us smiles, and said thank you.

Part 4-
Why is the idea Pay It Forward important?
I think the idea is important because, it helps others to realize that if you do something good, it actually does feel good. Also the little things, we should be doing on our own, and not to be asked.

Has your act of kindness made a difference?

I think it made a difference, even though it wasn't the biggest thing to do. The Christmas cards helped them feel the joy in the season, and it said to repay it by doing something good back to others.

How I stopped an Alien Invation using Proportion

One day I was coming home from school, and suddenly when I was going to go unlock the door. A light flashed into my eyes, and I looked up and noticed there was a UFO on top of my house floating. Some weird forms of life, came down and said " We don't come in peace, and we will destroy your city unless you help us out with our proportion problem. " I was thinking, " Has time stopped, because my family isn't moving? " The alien said " It is up to you now, to help us with our problems or we will destroy this city, if your answer is wrong say GOOD-BYE to everyone. " I was so scared, everyone's life was at stake and it was up to me to save them.

The first question they asked me was:
What is the unit rate for each? a) Two pens cost 94 cents.
I quickly thought " What was 94 divided by 2 ? " I answered 47 cents.

b) Four blocks stacked one on top of the other are 24 cm.
My heart was beating fast, and I said " One block is 6cm high.

The second question was:
A small gear turns 18 times in the same time that a large gear turns 4 times. How many times will the large gear turn if the small gear turns 54 time? Draw a diagram to help set up a proportion and solve the problem.
"The large gear turns 12 times." I said.

The third question was:
14. Last night 30 cm of snow fell in 6h. If it continues snowing at the same rate, how long will it take for 45 cm of snow to fall?
Finally I was so happy to be done, I yelled to them " 9 HOURS ! "

Then, they left so fast its like nothing ever happened. The time wasn't frozen anymore, and my whole family was looking at me weirdly because I looked so happy to see them back in motion. They never believed my story and they thought I must have hit my head on something. But in my head I knew that I saved our city. (:

Michelle's Rate Growing Post

Part 1

Ratio : compares 2 quantities measured in different units
Rate : compares 2 quantities measured in the same units

What is the difference between ratio and rate?
The differnce is Ratio is in DIFFERENT units and Rate is in the SAME units.

Question from pg. 60 :

5. What is the unit rate in each?

a) A blue whale eats 8 t of krill in 2 days.
answer : 4 t krill / day

b) The cruising speed of a blue whale allows it to travel 193 km in 10 h.
answer : 19.3 km / h

c) A bull moose bellows 15 times in 2 1/2 h.
answer : 6 times /h

Question from pg. 61
10. Trevor rode his mountain bike 84 km in 3 h. Jillian rode 70 km in 2.5 h. Who is
the faster cyclist? How do you know?
answer: Both of them were the same speed because they got 28k/h.

Coin question:
If the pennies were stacked how tall would they be ?
( I actually measured the 50 pennies )
71mm : 50pennies
1mm : penny

50/50 = 1
71mm/50 = 1.42mm

( I just rounded 1.42 to 1 because that is really tiny and I don't think you can see that on a ruler.)

Part 2
1) What would the recipe look like if it had to serve 10 people? Show your calculations.

10 ÷ 4 = 2.5

ground beef - 0.5 x 2.5 = 1.25 lb
medium onion, diced - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5
stalk celery finely diced - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5
clove garlic, minced - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5
canned tomatoes, chopped - 14 x 2.5 = 35 oz
can tomato paste - 0.5 x 2.5 = 1.25
parsley - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5 tsp
basil - 1.5 x 2.5 = 3.75 tsp
oregano - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5 tsp
sugar - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5 tsp
Worcestershire Sauce - 0.5 x 2.5 = 1.25 tsp
seasoning salt - 0.5 x 2.5 = 1.25 tsp
bay leaf - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5

2) What would the recipe look like if you had to only serve 1 person? Show your calculations.

10
÷ 1 = 10

ground beef - 1.25 ÷ 10 = 0.125 lb
medium onion, diced - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25
stalk celery finely diced - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25
clove garlic, minced - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25
canned tomatoes, chopped - 35 ÷ 10 = 3.5 oz
can tomato paste - 1.25 ÷ 10 = 0.125
parsley - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25 tsp
basil - 3.75 ÷ 10 = 0.375 tsp
oregano - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25 tsp
sugar - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25 tsp
Worcestershire Sauce - 1.25 ÷ 10 = 0.125 tsp

seasoning salt - 1.25 ÷ 10 = 0.125 tsp
bay leaf - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25

Michelle's BOB2 Ratio for October 25, 2009

1. Some of the mistakes I made on my test:

On one of the questions I wasn't sure if I should answer it in lowest terms. It didn't say to, so I just put 2:4. Next time I will remember, that the best answer is in lowest terms if there is a choice for it.

The question with 84 students, and finding out the percent, I got mixed up there. I didn't know how to get the percent. But some how on the calculator I ended up pressing numbers to find out the "percent." Since it said to round to one decimal place, I thought I had gotten the right number because I could round18. 4444 etc ( or something like that.) I know now that when you want to find the percent you can just compare the fractions, then divide the fraction to get the decimal.

Also in another question where you had to compare which two teams had the same amount of wins and lost, I didn't show my work because it didn't say to, or I forgot that the teacher said showing your work will give you the marks. I just put 5:4 and a sentence saying they were equivalent to each other. For the next text, I will try to show my work so I can earn those marks.

The questions that gave me difficulty were :

In a group of 84 students surveyed, the ratio of student preference is 7 oatmeal eaters to 4 granola eaters to 3 toasted O eaters. Of the 84 students, how many prefer oatmeal and how many preferred granola?
I got this question right, but in order for you to answer the question, you had to find what number THAT will get you to 84 if you times THAT number by all the " different eaters." Then add it up, and it should give you 84.

A stable has 39 passengers on it as it starts its run. At the first stop 12 passengers get off and 18 passengers get on. What is the ratio of the number of passengers who were on the train when it left the first station? Express your answer in lowest terms.
a) 2:3 b) 13:15 c) 18:12 d) 27:39
This question was hard for me, because the way they put the question got me very confused. I had to read it over and over until I finally found an answer that was on one of the choices. ( I got it right. ) I had to add and subtract numbers, then eventually I had divide to find the lowest terms.

Michelle's Scribepost for October 18, 2009

Question # 16

16. A) Write the ratio of the length A' B' compared to the length of A B.

A' B' = 1.5 inches long.
A B = 3 inches long.
The second triangle is half (1/2) the size of the first triangle. When I compared both of the triangles the ratio would be 1:2 since the original was 1/2 the size of the reduction.

B) Write the ratio of the length A' C' compared to the length of A C.

A' C' = 1.5 inches long.
A C = 3 inches long.
The ratio is 1:2 , because on both sides of one triangle they were the same measurement. therefor it is the same answer as the first question.

C) Use your knowledge of ratio and percent to explain the meaning of 50% reduction.

1:2 , 1/2 , 50 % mean the same thing. When I compared both triangles, the original triangle length was half longer than the reduction triangle. So 50 % reduction means its half the size of what its original length was.

Michelle's Scribepost for October 12 , 2009

WARNING !! I don't know why my work is ending up really big, but on my screen when I type it , its the right size so yeah sorry.

My RED question:

How much is in the jar ?
There are 100 $ in the jar, in coins.

My PURPLE question:

If you share the $100 with 10 people, how much does everyone get ?
Each person would get $10. If you divide 100 into 10 you get 10. ( 100/10=10)

PART 2

How full is the jar using Canadian coins ?
Well the jar is filled up about 3/4 of American coins. (1350 coins all together.) And we know that in Canadian coins there are 370 coins. Since we have loonies and toonies, and we ask for 100 $ in coins, it will be a lot less coins than American. If we put the 370 coins ( 100 $ ) in the same jar, I'd estimate it'd be a little over 1/4 of the jar. If you calculate 1350 / 4= 337.5 & 1350/3=450 . Somewhere in between you'd find 370, so that's why I said the coins would fill little over 1/4 of the jar.

How high are the stacks of coins ?
( because of ELIJAH we had to do this! )

1 cent = 2mm
2mm x 50 = 100mm

5 cents = 3mm
3mm x 40 = 120mm

10 cents = 1mm
1mm x 50 = 50mm

25 cents = 2mm
2mm x 40 = 80mm

1 dollar = 3mm
3mm x 25 = 75mm

2 dollars = 3mm
3mm x 25 = 75mm

Michelle's BOB Scribepost for October 6, 2009

The 3 things I know about graphing :

First of all when making a graph you need to have :
- a title
- the y and x-axis
- labels on both axis'
- label the scale ( make sure the intervals are the same, and are going up by the same amount of numbers)
- color it

There are many different graphs used:

( Advantages... )

Bar graph (most common) : are best for comparing data.
Double Bar Graph : good for comparing 2 sets of data.
Circle Graph : comparing categories, using percent.
Line Graph : showing changes in a data over a period of time.
Pictograph : comparing data by using pictures, and are easier to count.

Misrepresenting Data :
  • (distorting scale) By using a break in the y-axis, can make the y-axis shorter, and can make the graph look like it hasn't / has increased as much as a graph with no break.
  • (distorting the size of bars) When you have a bar graph,you can make a bar wider than the others so it sticks out more, and makes it look like it has more amount.
  • (distorting the visuals) When you have a pictograph, you can make the least data seem like the most, by making the picture bigger than the rest of the pictures. Which makes it look more important than the other data.

What I know now that would've improve on my test:

I could have colored it, and instead of just organizing the sums into ascending order , I could have made a t-chart and tally the sums. Also in my paragraphs I should have predicted what the outcomes would be if I kept on rolling the die.

Michelle's four 4's post

Today in Math class, Mr.Harbeck and Mr. Bache told us to explain " Why is 4/4 + 4/4 = 2 and 4 ÷4 + 4 ÷4 = 2 the same ? "

I think they are the same because 4/4 is one whole and if you add another whole (4/4) , it will be equal to two wholes. Also, 4
÷ 4 = 1 and if you do that again and add the two sums together, you will get 2. To me they are the same thing, but with different signs.

And I think the " line " in a fraction that separates the numerator from the denominator also means divide, just written differently.

So its the same thing , in My opinion.

Michelle's scribepost for September 29, 2009

QUESTION # 2

a ) Sophie surveyed her friends about their favorite flavor of ice cream. What information is missing on the graph?

The information missing on the graph is the total of people there are, and also the number of ice creams.

b) How could you present this data more accurately ?

The number of people interviewed isn't displayed anywhere in this graph. For the graph to be accurate you need to know how many people were interviewed.
