FOLDABLES!!!!!!!

Hi guys today we had to do our foldables on section 5.1

All of this on the key idea section including the question 1 &2

Question 1: My answer was, She is write because all you need to draw is top, front and side. You dont need to find the other side of top, front and side because you know that their the same size.

Question 2: My answer on question 2 was for me its right because by looking at it you have a good view and there wont be a problem by drawing it like that. if you want to see the other side of the book just imagine that your looking at it right now because there the same size if you turn it the other way.

PLEASE COMMENT !!!!! THANK YOU!!!!

Jose's scribepost for February 17, 2010

Yesterday in math, our class moved onto a new unit called SURFACE AREA. We started off by creating our new foldable which turned out to be a RECTANGULAR PRISM.

All rectangular prisms have :
- 6 faces

- 8 edges
- 8 VERTICES

TO DESCRIBE A 3D OBJECT, COUNT ITS FACES, EDGES, AND VERTICES

DEFINITIONS :

face- A face is a flat surface of a 3D figure. EXAMPLE:
vertex - A vertex is a point where two or more straight lines meet. EXAMPLE:

edge: Is the line where two surfaces meet. EXAMPLE :
Net : It is a 3 dimension shape, that is flattened. FOR EXAMPLE WHEN YOUR MAKING A CUBE, ONCE YOU FIRST GET THE LAYOUT.

RECTANGULAR PRISM : A rectangular prism is a solid 3D object that has 6 faces that are rectangles. IT CAN LOOK LIKE MANY DIFFERENT WAYS.

After we found out those definitions, we had to draw 3 different other kinds of rectangular prisms and make a chart to write down the similarities and differences of them:
Similarities : Each of those RPS have 6 faces, 6 sides, 8 edges, and 8 vertices. Differences : Each look different from each other but are the same. The dimensions are different, and the face sizes are different

Once we finished that, we had to finish page 48 in our homework book. The very last thing we had to do was go home and find 3 rectangular prisms from our house and draw the SIDE, FRONT, and TOP view of them. These are the objects I chose :

Vanessa's scribe post for 02-02-10

So today , we did a couple of things. For homework we're suppose to copy 2 show you knows into our foldable with the key ideas under it. There are also some questions for us on page 148 and 149 that we are to do. We ONLY do the odd numbers until 11.

Question 1

Draw a diagram to show how you could represent the cost of a $100 item with and without tax.

Question 3

Kyle says that a population increase of 15% on year followed by an increase of 10% the next year is the same as a population increase of 25% over two years. Is Kyle correct? Explain your reasoning.

Elona's Scribe post for February 4, 2010

Pages 148-149 & 150 - 151.

4.
Chris purchased the following items:
- 2 binders at $4.99 each
- 1 math set for $3.99
- a backpack for $19.99
Find the total cost including 5% GST
and 7% PST.

{ANSWER}
4.99 + 4.99 = 9.98
9.98 + 3.99 + 19.99= 33.96.
33.96
÷ 100 x 12 = 4.07
4.07 + 33.96 = 38.03. (Or .04)

2.
Your friend shows you how to calculate the cost of an item including tax using several steps. You tell her that you can do the calculation in one step. Show how you would do this.

For example:
An item costs $40.
The tax is 5% GST and 7% PST
40 ÷ 100 x 12 = 4.8.
4.8 + 40 = $44.80.

6.
A store discounted items by 50% off the
original price one week. The following
week an additional 10% was taken off the
already reduced price. The regular price
of a CD player was $85.00. What is the
reduced price in the second week?

Devin's Scribepost For Febuary.3/2010

Hello everyone here are my questions for today.

page 150,151

4.How many hundred grids needed to show each of the following percents?

a.101%-You need 2 grids because each grid represents 100 and since you cant add more squares to your grid you have to make another one for the 1%.

b.589%-You need 6 grids,five for the 500% and 1 grid for the 89%.

c.1450%-You need 15 grids,14 for the 14oo% and 1 grid for the 50%.

11.Express the percent as a fraction and a percent?

a.Kyle scored 95.5% on a practice test.

To turn the percent in a decimal you have to divide the number by 100 like this-
95.5 divided by 100=0.955

Heres the fraction

95.5 191
over =over
1000 200

to get that answer you have to divide the 1000 by 5 and you will get 200 and you do the same for the top.

12.Write your answer to the nearest tenth.

115 of 230
115 divide by 100=1.15

1.15of 230
1.15x230=264.5

Princess' Scribepost for February 3, 2010

2. Your friend shows you how to calculate the cost of an item including tax using several steps. You tell her that you can do the calculation in one step. Show how you would do this.

Example:
item - $200
taxes - 5 % + 7 % = 12 %
200 x 1.12 = $224

4. Chris purchased the following items:
• 2 binders at $4.99 each
• 1 math set for $3.99
• a backpack for $19.99
Find the total cost including 5% GST
and 7% PST. (12 %)

4.99 (2) + 3.99 + 19.99 = 33.96
33.96 x 1.12 = $38.04

6. A store discounted items by 50% off the
original price one week. The following
week an additional 10% was taken off the
already reduced price. The regular price
of a CD player was $85.00. What is the
reduced price in the second week?

(p.s. sorry if it doesn't make any sense, if you don't understand please feel free to leave some questions on the comments)

Michelle's Percent Scribe for February 3, 2010

4.99 + 4.99 + 3.99 + 19.99 = 33.96
( add all the items together, to get the total )

33.96 x 1.12 = 38.04
Then you find 12% of 33.96. I did it the easier way and added the taxes and the 100 % together.

The reduced price in the second week is $ 38.25 .

For example if the item cost $35 plus tax. ( 12 % )
You could just combine the 100and the % 12 % to get 112 %. Then divide by 100 to get 1.12.
After : 35 x 1.12 = $39.20

( That's the easiest way I'd do it .)

Aldrine's Scribepost for Febuary 1 2010

MY SCRIBEPOST

Today we checked our homeworks in the text book about Show you Know 1 there's 2 questions you have to do show you know 1 and after that you have to do it again but this time its 20% off, and heres the question.

SHOW YOU KNOW

A backpack cost $35 dollar. Use the method of your choice to find the total cost of backpack, if the GST is 5 % and the PST is 6%. Use another method to check your work.

Ill do the same thing but this one is 20% discount.

You put this in your foldable secetion Combining Percents
• Percents can be combined by adding to solve problems. 5% + 7% = 12%
•
To calculate the increase in a number,You can add the combined percent amount to the original number.
12% of 100
= 0.12 ・~ 100 =
12
100
+ 12 =
112
•
Percents of percents can be used to determine amounts that result from
consecutive percent increases or decreases.
PLEASE TELL ME IF I MADE A MISTAKE AND PLEASE COMMENT THANK YOU :)

Riemer's scribepost for February 2, 2010

I am doing the question 5 and 9.

5) Ravi purchased 3 DVDs for $19.99 each. Find the total cost of the DVDs including 5% GST and 6% PST.

I rounded 19.99 to 20 because its an easier number to work with if you know what im saying ;)

Since Ravi bought 3 DVDs, I multiplied 20 by 3 which is 60 if you dont know how to mutiply.

After that I found 10% by dividing 100 by
                                                                          10.

I found 1% by dividing 10 by 10.

Then the taxes. 5% GST and 6% PST, I added them together which makes 11%.

After all these caculations, i added them all together.

The cost of the DVDs would be $66.60 :)

9. Arjay was thinking of buying a car worth $ 23 000, but delayed purchasing the car for a year. During the year, the cost of the car increased by 3.2%.

a) What was the price of the car when Arjay purchased it?

I found 10% by dividing by 10.

I found 1% by divding by 10 again.

I divided by 10 one more time to get 0.1% and times by 32 to get 3.2%

The price would be $23,736.00

b) What was the total cost of the car including 5% GST and 5% PST?

GST and PST = 5% + 5% = 10%
How to get = 10% I divided 100 by 10
The price with all the taxes and the current price would be $26,036.00

Carla's Scribepost for February 1, 2010

HELLO (:

Today in class we learned how to find the total cost of something (including tax.) I'm going to show how to find it in 2 different ways.

Question 2. Suppose GST is 5% and PST is 7%. You purchase an item for $100.

1st Way
- First you add the taxes (5+7=12.) Then find 100% (100.) Then add them all up, so the total cost will be $112.

2nd Way
- You could find 112% of the number. ($112)

Question 3. Suppose an item regularly priced at $200 is on sale for 10% off.
PST is 7% and GST is 5%.

(Click on the picture, If you can't see.)

I hope I did it right..
Thank You for reading my post. If you have any thoughts, COMMENT! (:

determine the percent of each number.
give you answer to the nearest hundredth.

5. A) 2/5 % of 325
0.004 of 325
0.004 x 325 = 1.3
how i got 0.004 :
divided 5 and 2 and got o.4 .

b) 15 1/4 % of 950
1525 of 950
0.1525 x 950 = 144.88
how i got 1525 :
divided 1 and 4 and got 0.25
so i put it together with the 15 .

c) 175% of 125.00
1.75 of 125.00
1.75 x 125.00 = 218.75

6. A) 5/8 % of 520
6.25 of 520
6.25 x 520 = 3250
how i got : 6.25
divide 8 and 5 and i got 6.25 .

b) 75 2/5 % of 200
7510 % of 200
7510 x 200 = 15020
how i got 7510 :
divide 8 and 5 and got 10 .

c) 250 % of 76.50
2.50 of 76.50
2.50 x 76.50 = 191.25

if i did something wrong , please comment . thank you (:

Giuseppe's questions for Jan 26 10

3. Use mental math to determine each of the following.

a) 300 % of 2000
100% of 2000 = 2000
300% of 2000 = 6000
To get 300%, you have to multiply the number by 3

b) 1 1/4 % of 60
1% of 60 = 0.6
0.25% of 60 = 0.15
0.6 + 0.15 = 0.75
I know that 1% of 60 is 0.6. So I divided that by 4 (to get 0.25%), and I got 0.15. I added them together and got 0.75

c) 0.1 % of 40
1% of 40 = 0.4
1% ÷ 10 = 0.1%
0.4 ÷ 10 = 0.04
First, I found 1% of 40. Then to get 0.1%, I divided 1% by 10. So that means I have to divide 0.4 by 10 to get 0.1% of 40

4. Use mental math to find the following.

a) 20 % of 60
100% of 60 = 60
100 ÷ 5 = 20
60 ÷ 5 = 12
To get 20% of a number, divide it by 5

b) 250 % of 400
100% of 400 = 400
100 × 2.5 = 250
400 × 2.5 = 1000
To get 250% multiply the number by 2.5

c) 10 1/2 % of 100
100

100% 100
10% 10
1% 1
0.5 0.5

10% + 0.5% = 10.5%
10 + 0.5 = 10.5
If you're trying to find a percent of a hundred, don't work so hard. The answer is the percent they're asking you to find.
Example: 45% of 100 = 45
32.256 % of 100 = 32.256

Hope this helps!!!!! Please comment if you have a question......even though I'm not gonna answer it

Foldable.
4.3 Percent of a Number

Key Ideas:

  • You can use mental math strategies such as halving, doubling and dividing by ten to find the percents of some numbers.
  • To calculate the percent of a number, write the percent as a decimal and then multiply by the number.
EXAMPLE:

How to FIND :
  • 10% - divide by 10.
  • 25% - divide by 4.
  • 5% - divide by 20.
  • 1% - divide by 100.
  • 150% - divide by 2 then add the numbers.
  • 0.5% - divide by 100 then divide by 2.
Communicate the Ideas.

1. Explain to a classmate how you could use menta
l math to find each of the following:

2. Describe two ways to find the 6% of 120.

Alvin's Scribepost for January 19, 2010

For the past century, the north magnetic pole has been drifting across the Canadian Artic. Prior to the 1970's , the magnetic pole was drifting at an average speed of 10 km/year. Since the 1970's , the speed at which the magnetic pole has been drifting has increased to about 50 km/year. The circumference of Earth is approximately 40 000 km.

a) What percent is the current speed of the original speed ?

The Current speed is 50 km/year.
The original speed was 10km /year.

Now to get the percent you first must find the decimal, to do so you first divide 50 by 10 which will give you 5, there's your decimal.
Then you multiply your decimal by 100 so 5 x 100 = 500.
So then the answer is the current speed of the original speed is 500%.

b)The circumference of the earth is approximately 40 000 km. At 50 km/year, what percent of the earth's circumference will the pole drift in 1 year ?.

First we have to find the decimal so then we divide 50 by 40 000, the answer is 0.00125 now we multiply it by 100 to get the percent.
So 0.00125 x 100 = 0.125%
In one year the pole will drift 0.125% of the Earth's circumference
