2 Minutes to Make a Difference

VERSION ONE

FINAL CUT

Please relect and talk about the changes you made between the first and final cut of your movie. Were the student comments helpful in making your final cut better?

I think the comments were very helpful to me, I knew there were some things that needed improvements in our video, but the comments were helpful because people pointed out things that I didn't notice. With most of the comments I agreed with what needed changing. To be honest, I think our video needed a lot of improvement from the start, those comments were helpful because there were some parts where it just looked wrong to me but I couldn't really tell what it was, till people pointed them out. When we made our final cut, I thought it was okay .. But it didn't turn out the way we would of liked it to. It was hard finding the time for all of us to get together and do the video all together, so that's probably why it didn't turn out the way we all wanted.

How did you find your expert? List 3 important points your expert added to your movie. What did you learn from your expert? How did you find your expert?
The person we interviewed wasn't exactly an expert, just someone who had lived and watched
others in poverty. We met him at a volleyball game. I started talking about our project, and then he ended up willing to do an interview for us.What was your greatest success in the 2 minutes project.

What skills will you take away with you and use in the future?
I think my greatest success when we were making the video was learing how to use the mac for editing and making our video . It would be nice to use what I have learned in the future if I ever decide to make a video.

What frustrated you during the movie making process? What strategies did you use to become successful?
I think the most frustrating part of this project was working with other people. It's not that I don't like them, but It's that when were all stressed about the movie we end up not wroking very well together. There were also times when we didn't agree, and we would have hard times making decisions. Thankfully we all pulled through with our video.

Why is the 2 Minutes project important to Grade 8 Students?
I think 2 minutes to make a difference is important to grade 8 students because were at the age where most of us dont think about the difficulties some people have to go through in other places. Because most of us aren't in their situation, we don't know how they feel and we dont understand why it's a problem. Yet I believe that you're never to young or old to learn about these kinda of things. And It's definetely never to late to help out or even make a difference.

How will you make a difference in the future?
I'm going to be honest, I don't think I would make a difference in the future. I'm being honest because I don't want to say I'll help out and just change my mind later. But maybe I will make a difference in the future, who knows ? I might learn more about global issues and then suddenly make a difference. But at this moment I dont think that will happen, only because I know myself
pretty well. It's hard to explain why I wouldn't make a difference. It's not that I don't want to, and it's not that I dont care, It's that I don't care enough to take the time to make a difference. I don't know how people are feeling when their suffering of something because no one's helping them. Since I don't know what that feels like, I don't believe I can make a differnce.. Just not right now, maybe far far far in the future.

How I Stopped An Alien Invasion Using Proportion

One day I was walking around school, and I saw people crowding up the hallways in a circle. So I ran and shoved people out of the way. As I got to the front, I noticed a strange vehicle parked right there, and a whole in the ceiling. I was confused with what was going on until I saw these strange purple monsters. Turns out they were aliens. They then walked up to me and made me answer 3 proportion questions or else they wouldn't leave. So I guess I had no choice but to do it.

The first problem they asked me was-

Delia was paid $35 for 5 h of babysitting. How much should she receive for 3 h? Use a unit rate to find the answer.
I replied " Delia should receive $21 for 3 h of babysitting " They made me show my work so here it was.

The second problem they asked me was-

David can saw a log into three pieces in 7 minutes. If he continues sawing at a constant rate, how long will it take him to saw a similar log into 6 pieces?
My answer was " It would take him 14 mn to saw 6 pieces. " So here is my work again
The third problem they asked me was-

Last night 30 cm of snow fell in 6 hours. If it continues snowing at the same rate, how long will it takefor 45 cm of snow to fall ?
The final answer was " It would take 9 hours for 45 cm of snow to fall " Heres what I did.

A) Sketch the triangle. Draw a square on each side of the triangle.

B) What are the areas of the three squares?

e=900mm²

f=5625mm²

g=7225mm²

C)Write an addition staement with the areas of the three squares.
e²+f²=g²
or
30²+40²=50²
or
900+5625=7225

Shania's Pay it Forward

What is "Pay it Forward"?
Pay it forward means that one person can make a big difference in effecting someone else's life in a good way. Sometimes paying it forward doesn't even have to be something really big like saving a life, it can be something simple like cheering up a friend. You never know, what you might think you did is really simple, small and wont make a difference, but through someone else's eyes you might of left a big impact in their life. When you pay it forward your goal should be to help someone who needs help then you get that person to help someone else and so on. When paying it forward you don't hope for something in return, you hope that the person you had helped is helping someone else who needs it. I think that if everyone really tried paying it forward it would work, so pay it forward !

What was your pay it forward act of kindness?
The act of kindness Princess, Elijah, Kamille and I chose to do was to go to the Childrens hospital and the kids some toys and other things. We chose to do this act of kindness because we know how much kids love toys. We also did it because its a good feeling knowing that you were the one that put a smile on a childs face.

How did your act of kindness go?
I think our act of kindness went better than I thought. It kind of sucked that we didn't get to meet the children who were receiving our gifts but I guess I understand, their only looking out for the kids. It would be really nice if the kids knew who we were so they can remember us forever, because I know I'll never forget this. Before we actually did our act of kindness I knew I was gonna feel good, but when we actually did it, it felt so much better than I thought. It's the best feeling knowing you helped someone in a special way. I'll never forget that feeling and I hope that in the future I can help someone in an even bigger way.

Why is the idea of Pay it Forward important?
Pay it forward is important because its good to learn to be giving to people who need just a bit of a boost. Another reason pay it forward is important is because it works, if everyone actually did a really good deed to someone who needs it the world would be a better place. At the same time, nobody and nothings perfect so you can't expect pay it forward to work, but its possible, anythings possible if everyone put the effort in trying to make the world a better place.

Shania's Rate Growing Post

PART 1

Rate - Compares to 2 quantaties measured in different units.
Ratio - Measures 2 different quantities measured in the same unit.
The difference between rate and ratio is that rate measured in different units while ratio is measured in the same unit.

The question I chose from page 60 is question 3.
a) Give two examples of rates that are common in everyday life.
An example of a rate is 7 days in a week.
7 days/1week

Another example of a rate is 6 periods in a day.
6periods/1day
b)What units measure each of the rates in part a)?
The units measured in part a) are periods and school and days and weeks.
c)Explain why a rate cannot be expressed as a percent.
A rate cannot be expressed as a percent because it does not have a part to whole relation.

The question I chose from page 61 was question number 10.

Trevor rode his mountain bike 84 km in 3 h. Jullian rode 70 km in 2.5 h. Who is the faster cyclist? how do you know?
Trevor and Jullian rode their bikes at the same speed.
How I got my answer :
First I converted the hours into minutes to get a more precise answer.
(3hr. > 180 min.) (2.5hr. > 150 min.)
Then I made a ratio table.

Then I had to divide the minutes to itself to get 1 minute.

In a ratio table, what you do to one side you have to do to the other.

PART 2

Question 1 :What would the recipe look like if it had to serve 10 people?

My calculations :
1/2 x 10 = 5 lb ground beef

1 x 10 = 10 medium onions

1 x 10 = 10 celeries finely sliced

1 x 10 = 10 cloves of garlic
14 x 10 = 140 oz of can of chopped tomatoes
1/2 x 10 = 5 cans of tomato paste
1 x 10 = 10 tsp parsley
1 1/2 x 10 = 15 tsp basil

1 x 10 = 10 tsp oregano
1 x 10 = 10 tsp sugar
1/2 x 10 = 5 tsp worchestershire sauce
1/2 x 10 = 5 tsp seasoning salt
1 x 10 = 10 bay leaf

Qustion 2 : What would the recipe look like if you had to only serve 1 person?

My calculations :
1/2 ÷ 4 = 0.125 lb ground beef
1 ÷ 4 = 1/4 medium onion
1 ÷ 4 = 1/4 celery finely sliced
1 ÷ 4 = 1/4 clove garlic
14 ÷ 4 = 3 1/2 oz of can of tomatoes chopped
1/2 ÷ 4 = 0.125 can of tomato paste
1 ÷ 4 = 1/4 tsp parsley

1 1/2 ÷ 4 = 0.375 tsp basil
1 ÷ 4 = 1/4 tsp oregano
1 ÷ 4 = 1/4 tsp sugar
1/2 ÷ 4 = 0.125 tsp worchestershire sauce
1/2 ÷ 4 = 0.125 tsp seasoning salt
1 ÷ 4 = 1/4 bay leaf

Shania's BOB scribepost - October 13, 2009

The 3 things i know about graphing

Types of graphs and their advantages :

  • Bar graph - Best used for comparing data

  • Double bar graph - Best used to compare 2 types of data to eachother over time

  • Line graphs - Best used to view changes over time

  • Double line graph - Best used to compare 2 types of data over time

  • Circle graph - Best used to compare percentage

  • Picto graph - Best used for comparing data using pictures

Misrepresenting the data :

  • Distorting scale - By using a break in the y-axis, you can make the y-axis shorter and it can make the graph look like it hasn't increased as much as a graph with no break.
  • Distorting the size of bars - When you have a bar graph, you can make a bar wider than the others so it sticks out more, and makes it look like it is more than the other bars.
  • Distorting the visuals - With a picto graph, you can make the lowest amount of data seems more than it really is, to do that you have to make the picture bigger than the rest of the pictures on the graph. Which makes it look more important than the other data.

What i should know to improve my test

In the second graph I chose to make the sum 7 stand out by colouring it a very different colour than the rest of the data. But to make it stand out more I could of widened the bar to make it stand out just a bit more. Another way I can improve my test is to predict what and describe the graph more.

Shania's Four4's - October 13, 2009

Four4's

Question : Explain how 4/4 is the same as 4÷4 .

Answer :
The symbols "/" and "÷" both mean division. The symbol "/" is most used with fractions. Division is a big part in fractions so i guess its why its okay to use "/" when dividing numbers. The other symbol "÷" is just the more common and it means the same thing as the other symbol.

I think they both mean the same thing, just different ways of showing division.

Question 16
An ice cream store developed the following graph to advertise its ice cream.

a) What ice cream do you believe developed this graph ?
I think Cool flavours probably created this graph because it appears that they sell two times as much as Dairy taste.
b) How is this graph misleading ?
I think this graph is misleading because there is no scale to compare the answers.
