Giuseppe's Rate Growing Post

Part 1

Rate: compares 2 quantities measured in DIFFERENT units.

Ratio: compares 2 quantities measured in the SAME unit.

What is the difference between ratio and rate?

RATE is comparing 2 quantities measured in DIFFERENT units while a RATIO compares 2 quantities in the SAME unit.

4. Determine the unit rate in each situation.

a) An orca swims 110 km in 2 h.

55/hour

b) A Canada goose flies 800 km in 12.5 h.

19.3/hour

c) Cathy plants 45 daffodils in 30 min.

1.5/mins.

12. The rate at which glaciers melt is increasing globally. The Saskatchewan Glacier near Banff has receded 1.5 km in the last 75 years. The Peyto Glacier shown below receded 1320 m from 1923 to 1993. Which glacier had the greater annual rate of melting?

Saskatchewan=20m/year

Peyto=19m/year

Saskatchewan Glacier has the greater annual rate of melting.

oops! sorry if I forgot to show my calculations. For 1, the calculation is something multiplied by 2.5 and for 2, it's (from 4) divide it by 4, and (from 10) divide it by 10.
