Here is my Growing Post for Surface Area

RECTANGULAR PRISM :

Here is the formula to calculate the area of a rectangular prism

a = l x w
a = 2 x 8

a = 16cm²

a = l x w

a = 2 x 2

a = 4cm²

TSA

= (bigger rectangle)+(bigger rectangle)+(bigger rectangle)+(bigger rectangle)+( smaller rectangle) + (smaller rectangle)
= 16 + 16 + 16 + 16 + 4 + 4

= 72cm²

TRIANGULAR PRISM :

Here is the formula to calculate the area of a triangular prism

a = b x h ÷ 2

a = 7 x 4 ÷ 2

a = 18cm²

Here is the formula to calculate the area of a rectangular prism

a = l x w

a = 3 x 7

a = 21cm²

a= l x w

a = 3 x 8

a = 24cm²

a= l x w

a= 3 x 4

a = 12cm²

TSA

= (triangle)+(triangle)+(rectangle)+(rectangle)+(rectangle)
= 18+18+21+24+12

= 73cm²

CYLINDER :

Here is the formula to calculate the radius

r = d ÷ 2

r = 6 ÷ 2

r = 3cm²

Here is the formula to calculate the area of a cylinder

sa = 2 x (pi x r²) + (pi x d x h)

sa = 2 x 3.14 x 3 x 3 + 3.14 x 6 x 7

sa = 56.52 + 131.88

sa = 188.4 cm²

So today , we did a couple of things. For homework we're suppose to copy 2 show you knows into our foldable with the key ideas under it. There are also some questions for us on page 148 and 149 that we are to do. We ONLY do the odd numbers until 11.

Draw a diagram to show how you could represent the cost of a $100 item with and without tax.

Question 3

Kyle says that a population increase of 15% on year followed by an increase of 10% the next year is the same as a population increase of 25% over two years. Is Kyle correct? Explain your reasoning.

Find the height of the pole where the guy wire is attached, to the nearest tenth of a metre.

c² - b² = a²

10² - 2² = a²
(10x10) - (2x2) = a²

100 - 4 = a²

96 = a²

√­­­­­­­­­­­¯96 = √­­­­­­­­­­­¯ a²
9.8 = a

The height of the pole is 9.8 metres.

Heeey everyone, sorry my scribe post is late but here it is...

Today, Ms.Usiskin taught us about right triangles. She labeled a diagram like this ...

We had to put this in the PYTHAGOREAN RELATIONSHIP area of our blue foldable.

right angle - is 90 degrees
legs - the shorter parts of the triangle
hypotenuse - the longest part of the triangle


After we talked about the right triangle a little more, Ms. Usiskin told gave us a sheet of graph paper that we had to cut in half and share the other piece with the person beside us. We then took our half and cut 2 3cm by 3cm, 2 4cm by 4cm, and 1 5cm by 5cm perfect squares. We then had to colour the 3cm by 3cm one colour, the 4cm by 4cm another colour, and the 5cm by 5 cm with no colour.

Sorry I don't have a picture to show you .. I'll post one up asap.

We figured out that we use one of every square. ( one 3cm by 3cm, one 4cm by 4cm, and one 5cm by 5cm ) .


So that's what we did on 12-10-09. Again I'm sorry it's late and I'm also sorry if there are any mistakes. byee...for now .

Vanessa's Pay it Foward

What does " Pay it Forward " mean ?

There are many definitions for the three words, " Pay it Forward ". If we all get together and share our thoughts on paying it forward, there are so many different ideas that we could do. To me " Pay it Forward " means to do good unexpected good deeds for people and tell them to do the same and they do unexpected good deeds and tell others to " Pay it Forward " and so on and so on. All of a sudden everyone's doing good deeds and the world becomes a better place. Even if one person does something, they are still making a difference. I can help " Pay it Forward " by picking up litter, volunteering at a homeless shelter or a humane society, perform for sick kids or even for charity. I can go on and on and list so many different things that others and I can do.

What was your act of kindness you performed ?

The act of kindness I performed along with my friends Charis and Ammorn, was volunteering at a school, my old school Victoria-Albert School. We decided to perform this act of kindness because since people help us out at Sargent, we thought we should do the same and help out Victoria-Albert because they've helped me out and I thought that it was a perfect opportunity to show that I am very thankful. This week, Charis, Darlene, Ammorn and I handed out candy canes with a greeting card.

How did your act of kindness go ?

Our act of kindness was fun and interesting. When we did our acts of kindness, I especially felt good about myself mostly because I know I helped other people besides myself. I'm pretty sure the others agree, it was a fun and interesting experience and I'm pretty sure they are proud of themselves too !

Why is the idea of paying it forward so important ?

I think that the idea of paying it forward is so important because we learn to help each other out and become an even better person. When you do an unexpected good deed for someone, it adds on and next thing you know everyone is becoming an even better person. It's pretty important because we're helping the world out little by little, even if it's little change, we're still changing the world. So basically, this is why paying it forward is so important.

Heeeey everyone ... sorry my scribe post is late but here it is...Today, Ms. U handed our tests back on squares. She told us that we could revise them at home and attempt to get a better mark than what we have. If we didn't do anything to it then we would get that mark we already had. We had either an M,E,R, or F on each question of our test and it was all up to us whether we want a better mark or not. We were then told to finish our blue foldables. Next, we were told to do questions 6, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 20, 21, and 25 on page 85 in our text book. Here are the questions...

6. A rectangle has an area of 64m²

a) Determine the prime factorization of 64.

b) Is 64 a perfect square?

c) Draw a square with that area and label it's side length.

9. What is the area of a square with each side length?

Heey everyone ..

In class, we had a long yellow sheet and and a 24x18 sheet of little squares.

Mr. Harbeck told us to cut out 2 perfect 10x10 squares and 2 10x8 squares and 2 2x10 squares. Then he told us to colour the 2 10x10 squares different colours. Then put a 10x8 square with a 2x10 square and colour it a different colour as well as the other set. Then we had to put the perfect 10x10 squares away and keep the 10x8 squares along with the 2x10 squares. Next we had to glue the 10x8 on the long yellow sheet and the 2x10 beside each other leaving 2cm space from the edge of the paper. Next we cut up the other 10x8 square up so that it goes up the other 10x8 thats already glued down by 4 and so that it goes 4 beside the original 10x8. Then you cut up the rest of the pieces and glue them into the empty spaces between the 4 10 strips on top of the original square and beside the original square.
So that makes the dimensions 1x1 which makes a cube 0.1 .

Once you have completed the big square you will find that there are 1 2x2's left. If not then you might have put extra pieces or not enough pieces into the square.

HOW I STOPPED AN ALIEN INVASION USING PROPORTION

ALIEN INVASION

One fine morning, I was taking my dog, Spot, for a walk, and like the usual we walked and played at Assiniboine Park. It was fairly quiet as the time was around 6am. The birds chirped, the squirrels made a pattering noise on the grass and some animals from the zoo made funny noises. At that time I was not really paying attention to why the animals were making funny noises, so I continued playing with Spot. About 30 minutes later, I noticed that there were animals escaping from their shelters. A few people ran away, while the tamers and employees tried to gain control of them. All of a sudden, a loud ringing noise prevented us from doing whatever it was that we were doing. A group of tourists were chased towards me and I wondered what all the comotion was about. As a stared off into the direction the tourists were coming from, I noticed a very thin wall of fog. As I stood there, I couldn't move. I really thought I was dreaming but as they started to come towards me at a pretty fast pace. They were now a few steps away from me and I screamed. I called out to Spot, but hadn't noticed that he had already run away. I cried mostly because I was scared and because I lost Spot. The leader told me straight up that " If I didn't answer 3 questions correctly, they would destroy planet Earth." As I heard him say those words, I quivered a bit and agreed knowing that it was a matter of a living or dying situation. He gave me 3 different questions, I noticed a tear drop coming out of my eye, then it was followed by a waterfall of tears. I read the questions at least 3 times and began.

Question 1 ...

Delia was paid $35.00 for 5 hours of babysitting. How much money will she receive in 3 hours? Use a unit rate to find the answer.

"Delia gets $21.00 in 3 hours" I answer. "That is (dramatic pause) CORRECT! Now you must answer these 2 questions correctly or else the human race will be destroyed" said the leader.

Question 2 ...

A gardener takes half an hour to mow and weed a lawn that measures 20m by 15m. He charges $25.00 an hour. How much money would the

gardener receive for a lawn that measures 40m by 30m.

"If the gardener mows a lawn that is 20m by 15 m and gets paid $25.00 then if you multiply 20m by 2 you get 40m, 15m by 2 you get 30m, and $25.00 by 2 you get $50.00, which means that the gardener receives $50.00 for mowing a lawn that is 40m by 30m" I shout out. Correct again! Ooh, I bet you won't answer this question correctly.

Question 3 ...

David can saw a log into 3 pieces in 7 minutes. If he continues sawing at a constant rate,

how long will it take him to saw a similar log into 6 pieces?

"Judging by this picture, I believe that it would take David 14 minutes to saw a log into 6 pieces" I replied happily.

Dang girl! You got all 3 questions right. You have saved the human race. C'mon you guys, lets go to some other planet and threaten to destroy their race!" said the leader in excitement. Soon after everyone cheered for me and I found Spot. Hooray! Then the aliens died in a spaceship crash.

What would the ingredients look like if you were to serve 10 people ? Show your work.

SOLUTION :: All you have to do is multiply the numbers by 2.5 .

QUESTION # 2 ::

What would the ingredients look like for 1 person ? Show your work .

Solution ::

Since you already calculated the ingredients for 10 people, all you have to do is divide the answers by 10.

Heeey sorry about my late post for BOB2 on ratios but here it is ....

What were some mistakes you did on your tests ?
A mistake that I did on my tests is that i didn't simplify it ( lowest terms ). Another mistake I did on my tests is not showing enough work, so I got less than what i should have gotten.
What I can do to improve my future tests...
I can study hard and read the questions slowly.

1) A picture frame has a width to length ratio of 5:7 . If the width of the photo is 9cm, the length of the photo is ?

Heeey everyone... The homework that Harbeck and Backe gave us for today is pretty simple.

Here's the question...

How is 4/4+4/4=2 the same as 4÷4+4÷4=2 ?

As you can see, 4/4 is a fraction and since theres 4 pieces out of four pieces, it equals 1 whole. The dividing line, " / " is the same as the dividing sign, " ÷ " its just that they are different symbols representing the same information.

Question 14
Two grade 8 classes collected cans for the food drive. Ms. Chan's class brought in 100 cans. Mr. Rajwani's class brought in 200 cans. Luke made this graph to display the results. Questions...
A) How is this graph misleading?
B) Based on the graph, what can you conclude about the canned drive?
C) Draw a different graph that is not misleading.

Answers...
A) This graph is misleading because the picture only shows 6 cans in each box which doesn't really show any information.
B) At the end of this graph its pretty much saying that Mr. Kajwani's class brought in 100 more cans for the can drive.
C)
