Elona's Scribe post for February 4, 2010

Pages 148-149 & 150 - 151.

4.
Chris purchased the following items:
- 2 binders at $4.99 each
- 1 math set for $3.99
- a backpack for $19.99
Find the total cost including 5% GST
and 7% PST.

{ANSWER}
4.99 + 4.99 = 9.98
9.98 + 3.99 + 19.99= 33.96.
33.96
÷ 100 x 12 = 4.07
4.07 + 33.96 = 38.03. (Or .04)

2.
Your friend shows you how to calculate the cost of an item including tax using several steps. You tell her that you can do the calculation in one step. Show how you would do this.

For example:
An item costs $40.
The tax is 5% GST and 7% PST
40 ÷ 100 x 12 = 4.8.
4.8 + 40 = $44.80.

6.
A store discounted items by 50% off the
original price one week. The following
week an additional 10% was taken off the
already reduced price. The regular price
of a CD player was $85.00. What is the
reduced price in the second week?

Elona's Pay it Forward

Part 1
What is Pay it Forward?
Pay It Forward is when you help someone, who needs help. It also means doing a good deed with no returns. When you Pay It Forward, you're making the world seem brighter. I love the feeling after helping someone. Their 'Thank you's' and their smiles. It makes you want to say, 'Hey, I just helped someone. And I feel GREEAT!'
Helping people, people helping others, makes everyone helping each other. Just like MJ said, 'Heal the Word, and make it a better place.' Do whats right, and help change the world.

Part 2

What was your Pay It Forward act of kindness?
I chose to clean up the entire house before my mom came home. I also made Christmas cards, and handed them out to every house in my neighborhood.

Why did you choose this activity?
I didn't want her to stay up really late cleaning it up. She works til 12am, and she usually sleeps at 3, so this is what I wanted to do.

Who did you help?
I helped my mother.

What did you do?
First, I started in the living room. Cleaned up everything there, then I washed the dishes. Went upstairs and cleaned there, then cleaned my room. Then, I cleaned the basement. It took me a total of 3 hours. (:

When did you do you act of kindness?
I cleaned the house on December 5th, then made cards that night, and handed them out the next morning.

Part 3
How did your act of kindness go?
It went great. I stayed up til my mom came, and she was very happy. (: I felt really good after this.

How did you feel?
It felt great.

How did the person or people react?
She was really surprised when I told her I didn't do it for money. Haha.

Did you ask the person or people to "Pay It Forward"?
Yes. I wrote it on the inside of the cards.

How did they react to your request?
My mom said nothing. And I didn't get to see the neighbors reactions.

Part 4

Why is the idea of "Pay it Forward" important?
The idea of Paying it Forward, is to help out each other, even if you don't know them, and feel good about yourself.

Has your act of kindness made a difference?
My act of kindness made a difference because it changed how my mother looked at me. She always thought I was so lazy, and would never do dishes. etc For the Christmas Cards, it made a difference because I'm thanking my neighbors, and what they've done for us.

PROOF. (:

Elona's Post for November 30, 2009

Today in class, we had a quiz on what we know about squares.
Then, we had to work on our foldable.
We had to discuss patterns in perfect squares with our partners, then share them with the class.

Example:
Between the 1 and 4, it skips 2 spaces. Then between 4&9, it skips 4 spaces. Then between 9 and 16, it skips 6 spaces. So, the pattern is (2,4,6) and so on.

HOW I DESTROYED ALIENS!

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1168/565419478_751aa4d968.jpg

How I Stopped an Alien Invasion using Proportion by Elona Duot
It was a sunny day in the city of Winnipeg. Nothing strange going on, all was normal. A girl named Elona Duot was reading a book in her backyard, until she heard a loud -thud-.
'What was that?' she said. She ran over to the place were the -thud- was.
"Oh my god.." she was so shocked. She had no idea what they were.
"Hello human. I am Smerf. We are from planet Mars. "
"We have come to take ove
r the world!! *evil laugh*"
"Unless.." said the alien. "if you solve 3 proportional
reasoning questions, then we will leave."
Elona smirked. "Easy as pie."
"Alright then, fi
rst question."
"A small gear turns 18 times in the same that a large gear turns 4 times. How many times will the large gear turn if the small gear turns 54 times? Draw a diagram to help set up a proportion and solve the problem."

The large gear will turn 12 times if the small gear turns 54 times.

"Darn" Said the Alien.
"Okay, okay second question."

"Delia was paid $35 for 5 h of babysitting. How much should she receive for 3 h? Use a unit rate to find the answer."

I answered "Delia should receive $21 for 3 h of babysitting."

"Grrr." "And now the final question."

"Look at the pattern. Set up a proportio
n you could use to find the number of small squares in figure 7."

-------------------x7
Squares/Figure- 2/1 = 14/7
-------------------x7
"There are 14 squares in Figure 7."

"NOO!" said the alien. You are too smart." "But we made a promise, and now we must leave."

Elona was so proud of herself, she decided to eat some ice cream.

THE END!

Elona's Rate Growing Post

EEEYYYOO I'M RICOOO.
Part one

Definitions:

Rate-
measures two different quantities measures in the same unit.
Ratio- Compares two quantities measured in different units.

What is the difference between a ratio and rate?
A Rate is comparing two quantities measured in different units, and a Ratio compares 2 quantities in the same unit.

6. Gina earns $78.00 for working 6 h. Asad makes $192.50 after working 14 h. Determine each person's unit rate of pay. Who has a greater hourly rate of pay?

Gina: $78/6h = 13/1h Gina gets $13 an hour.
Asad $ 192.50/14 = $13.75/1h Asad gets 13.75 an hour.
Asad gets more pay than Gina.

10. Trevor rode his mountain bike 84 km in 3 hours. Jillian rode her mountain bike 70 km in 2.5 hours. Who is the faster cyclist ?. How do you know ?

Trevor: 84/3 = 28km/hour.
Jillian: 70/2.5 = 28 km/hour.

So that means they were both going the same speed.

1. What would the recipe look like if it had to serve 10 people. Show your calulations.
Ground beef - 0.5 x 2.5 = 1.25 lb
Medium Onion diced - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5
Stalked celery finely diced - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5
Clove garlic minced - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5
Canned tomatoes chopped - 14 oz x 2.5 = 35 oz
Canned tomato paste - 0.5 x 2.5 = 1.25
Parsley - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5 tsp
Basil - 1.5 x 2.5 = 3.75 tsp
Oregano - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5 tsp
Sugar - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5 tsp
Worcestershire Sauce - o.5 x 2.5 = 1.25 tsp
Seasoning Salt - o.5 x 2.5 = 1.25 tsp
Bay leaf - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5

2. What would the recipe look like if it only had to serve 1 person. Show your work.

Ground beef - 1.25 ÷ 10 = 0.125 lb
Medium Onion diced - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25
Stalked celery finely diced - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25
Clove garlic minced - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25
Canned tomatoes chopped - 35 oz ÷ 10 = 3.5 oz
Canned tomato paste - 1.25 ÷ 10 = 0.125
Parsley - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25 tsp
Basil - 3.75 ÷ 10 = 0.375 tsp
Oregano - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25 tsp
Sugar - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25 tsp

Worcestershire Sauce - 1.25 ÷ 10 = 0.125 tsp
Seasoning Salt - 1.25 ÷ 10 = 0.125 tsp
Bay leaf - 2.5 ÷ 10 = 0.25

What I did is divide it all by 10 to get 1.

Elona's Four4's October 29, 2009

Four4's
Question: How is 4/4 the same as 4÷4
?

Answer:
4/4 is exactly the same as 4÷4. The symbols "/" and "÷" represent the same thing, which is divide. But "/" is most likely used when dealing with fractions. But the proper way to represent it is using "÷" because some people can mistake "/" for a fraction.

Question 20

A bag of fertilizer is labeled, 15-20-10. this means that it contains 15% of Nitrogen, 20% of Phosphorus and 10% of Potassium by weight. How many kilograms of
Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium are in the bag?

A)

To find out, you need to know how much kilograms there are in each ingredient.
15% of 30= 4.5 kg

20% of 30= 6 kg

10% of 30= 3 kg

4.5+6+3= 13.5 kg

There are 4.5kg of Nitrogen, 6kg of Phosphorus, and 3kg of potassium for a total of 13.5kg.
