Alvin's 2 minutes to make a difference reflection





2. The changes we made between out Version 1 and our final cut we added our voices in because at the time we finished our rough we didnt have a microphone to record our voices. We added in our interview with a manitoba hydro expert we asked him questions over the phone and he answered. We changed some other things around so it would math with our video, and we added our page of credits. The comments the students made were helpful because they said to add voice which we did afterwards and they told us some other things we could improve on in our video.

3. We found our expert through Jeric because I think his dad found this manitoba hydro expert for us. 3 important points that he told us were : we found out that 15 incandescent light bulbs count last as long as only 1 fluorescent light bulb !, we learned that how to dispose of the fluorescent light bulbs properly and if we dont dispose of light bulbs properly it can affect our food chain by going into the water, then animals then we eat the animals that contain mercury, and he told us about how much we could save off our electricity bill if we just changed every bulb in out house into a fluorescent light bulb.

6. Our greatest success in the 2 minutes to make a difference project is that we got to raise awareness to other people that if you change every light bulb in your house, you can save lots of money and the environment by keeping less waste out of the land fills because, if theres more light bulbs in the wastelands that means we need more room for garbage and take up space on the earth instead of if you use fluorescents you could save up to 15x the lightbulbs you see in land fills.
Some skills that we could take in use in our futures would be how we can save money by purchasing more efficient light bulbs to replace the un efficient and save energy and our planet, another skill is that we could make people care about things that are happening around the world like how more light bulbs in the landfills takes up more room on our earth.

7. Some things that frustrated me was how were we going to make the movie and would it be good or will it be okay, in my opinion our movie turned out great. Some stratagies that made us come succesful were that we sat down and concentrated on our work and once it was finished like, as much as we could do at the time then we would allow ourselves to go play if we didnt we would always play and get nothing done.

8. The grade 8 2 minutes to make a difference project is important because, the grade 8 students can learn very important things like how we cant get things for granted and how lucky we are to be born and raised in canada and we get to go to school. We can learn how to save electricity effiecently like our project by switching all your light bulbs into fluorescent so you can save money. You can learn how to aware people of the things that are going on around the world that they dont know about, and you can make them take action so the people in need will get what they need so they can survive and live a good life.

9. I will make a difference in the future by, when I own my own house I could change all the light bulbs in the house into fluorescent bulbs so that I can save energy. While saving energy I can keep less light bulbs out of the waste land because while using fluorescent since they last longer so I would be throwing less light bulbs out so there would be less land fills. Thats how I would make a difference in the future.

Alvin's Surface Area Growing Post

This is my growing post
First off my rectangular prism:



This is my Net :





The formula I use to calculate the surface area of a rectangular prism is that first I find the area of all the faces, then I add up all the areas of the 6 faces. Thats how I get the surface area to my rectangular prism.
Now I'm going to solve it:
Top = A = LxW
A =6x2
A = 12 cm2
Side = A = LxW
A = 3x2
A = 6 cm2
Front = A = LxW
A = 6x3
A = 18 cm2
Now since I have the area of the 3 sides the other 3 sides are always equivalent so now I find TSA
TSA = side+side+front+back+top+bottom
TSA= 6+6+18+18+12+12
TSA = 72 cm2

To find the surface area for a triangle to me its like the rectangle but you have 5 sides and for the triangle faces you have to divide by 2 becuase its half a square.
Now I'm gonna solve it :
Front : A = LxW divided by 2
A = 5x4 divided by 2
A = 10 cm2
Side : A = LxW
A = 6x10
A = 20 cm2
Bottom : A = LxW
A = 4x10
A = 40 cm2
Now the 2 sides are the same because on this triangle they are equivalent.
Now for the TSA
TSA = side+side+bottom+front+back
TSA = 20+20+40+10+10
TSA = 100 cm2

To Find the surface area no a cylinder you can find the area of all the sides, but that takes to long for me so I just use a simple formula and then plug in the numbers ( 2 x pi x radius squared + pi x d x h). If you are given a radius then you must find the diameter first, and if your given a diameter you must find the radius.
First I'm gonna find the radius because I'm given the diameter.
R= diameter divided by 2
R= 4 divided by 2
R= 2cm
Now I'm gonna solve it :
TSA = 2 x pi x radius squared + pi x d x h
TSA = 2 x 3.14 x 4 + 3.14 x 4 x 6
TSA = 100.48 cm squared

For the past century, the north magnetic pole has been drifting across the Canadian Artic. Prior to the 1970's , the magnetic pole was drifting at an average speed of 10 km/year. Since the 1970's , the speed at which the magnetic pole has been drifting has increased to about 50 km/year. The circumference of Earth is approximately 40 000 km.

a) What percent is the current speed of the original speed ?

The Current speed is 50 km/year.
The original speed was 10km /year.

Now to get the percent you first must find the decimal, to do so you first divide 50 by 10 which will give you 5, there's your decimal.
Then you multiply your decimal by 100 so 5 x 100 = 500.
So then the answer is the current speed of the original speed is 500%.

b)The circumference of the earth is approximately 40 000 km. At 50 km/year, what percent of the earth's circumference will the pole drift in 1 year ?.

First we have to find the decimal so then we divide 50 by 40 000, the answer is 0.00125 now we multiply it by 100 to get the percent.
So 0.00125 x 100 = 0.125%
In one year the pole will drift 0.125% of the Earth's circumference

Question #14

Show whether each triangle in the table is a right triangle.
Triangle Side Lengths
A 9, 12, 15
B 7, 8, 11
C 7, 24, 25
D 16, 30, 34
E 10, 11, 14

Triangle A is a right triangle because 9 squared is 81 and 12 squared is 144, and 15 squared is 225 which then you can make this statement 81 + 144 = 225 ( 9 squared + 12 squared = 15 squared).

Triangle B is not a right triangle because 7 squared is 49 and 8 squared is 64, and 11 squared is 121 which then you can't make an addition statement because 49 + 64 doesn't equal 121 it equals 113.

Triangle C is a right triangle because 7 squared is 49 and 24 squared is 576 , and 15 squared is 625 which then you can make an addition statement because 49 + 576 = 625 ( 7 squared + 24 squared = 25 squared)

Triangle D is a perfect square because 16 squared is 256 and 30 squared is 900, and 34 squared is 1156 which then you can make an addition statement because 256 + 900 = 1156 ( 16 squared + 30 squared = 34 squared)

Triangle E is not a perfect square because 10 squared is 100 and 11 squared is 121, and 14 squared is 196 which cannot make an addition statement because 100 + 121 is clearly 221.

(which I meant addition statement, I really meant Pythagorean theorem)

Winnipeg Harvest

What is Winnipeg Harvest ?

Winnipeg Harvest was first founded in 1984 by Lee Newton. It's a place where stores like Safeway and people donate extra food so that Winnipeg harvest can send that out to all the Church's, food banks and school for food programs. Winnipeg Harvest gives over 39, 000 people food each month!, and almost have of those recipients were children just like me and you.

What we did there :

Guiseppe, Princess, Jamie, Mr.Harbeck and I picked onions and potatoes. Basically what we did was first Richard I think his name was gave us a tour then Thessa I think that was her name gave us the rest of the tour than gave us our job. Our job was to pick the bad potatoes form the good potatoes and throw the bad ones into a big bin which late would be used agian and the good potatoes would be put into boxes and stacked onto a pallete then to be deilvered to a food bank we did the same with the onions.

Why Winnipeg Harvest is important ?

Winnipeg Harvest is they hand out food to the less fortunate that can't afford to buy thier own groceries. Winnipeg Harvest gives over 39, 000 people food every single month !. Lots of people volunteer there some are even the people that recieve food from Winnipeg Harvest!. Without winnipeg harvest our food banks wouldnt have much food to hand out to the people that live in poverty.

Alvin's Pay it forward

What does pay it forward mean to me ?
Well pay it forward means a lot of different things to me. One thing is helping people when they are in the need of help E.g ( When someone is short 25 cents when wanting to buy a bag of chips because they are starving) and later on someone might help you. Another thing is you can clean up the environment by picking up waste and driving cleaner cars or car pooling so that people in the future won't have to live with as much pollution as we live with right now. One last thing is that if you respect someone the same person will respect you so everyone gets together well then we won't have as much war and have more peace !


What was my pay it forward act of kindness ?
My pay it forward act of kindness was to go to a soup kitchen (were people that can't afford food on their own go both kids and adults) and volunteer by helping them prepare the food so that they could make the food quicker so that the hungry people sitting outside could be fed.


Why did you choose this activity ?
My group and I chose this activity because we wanted to help out and have a new experience at the same time. We never had been to a soup kitchen before and wanted to see how it was like inside because, a soup kitchen is where all the homeless people eat and we wanted to help out the people that cannot afford their own food.

Who did you help ?
We helped the homeless people that couldn't afford their own food so they had to go to a soup kitchen to be fed.


What did you do ?
We were back in the kitchen preparing some food for the people to eat. Our job was to butter the bread ( we had to butter lots and lots of bread ), so that more of the other adults could focus on making the chili that was gonna go with our buttered bread.


When did you do your act of kindness ?
We did our act of kindness on Sunday, December 6, 2009 around noon hour until late afternoon. We gave up lunch time to help prepare food for other people. Before the homeless came in to eat.

How did your act of kindness go ?

My act of kindness went great because me and my group got to help the volunteer's inside the kitchen by helping them butter lots of bread so they could work on the chili and we fed lots and lots of homeless people.

What happened ?

Well alot happened, first when we went in the lady gave us a long speech about safety and why people come here. Next she gave us a tour of the back room that had soaps and toothpaste all the way to the kitchen. Then there was a team meeting where all the volunteers would go and talk about things, like we all stood in a circle then we went around and everyone had to say how they would make there christmas simple and I said "Hi, my name is Alvin and I'm from Sargent Park and this Christmas I'm looking forward to spending time with my family". After that everyone got working on the food and my group was buttering bread. After we were done the same lady from the beggining asked us about our experience today.

How did it feel ?

Helping people so that they could help others felt great and extremely new and exciting for me because when we buttered the bread so that the homeless people out there could eat it I felt good because we conquered their hungry so that they could focus on other things, like finding a job or raising their kids.

How did the person or people react ?

The people reacted in excitment and relief because they had Jr.Highs helping them in the kitchen so they could finish the food faster and that they would see the youth of the community help them prepare food for the less fortunate people.

If you did not ask the person to "pay it forward" how come ?

I didn't ask the person to pay it forward because well there was so many, many volunteers, and that we were so busy doing this and doing that we didn't have much time. But on the other hand we did tell her about our project and how we were helping people buying paying it forward at the beggining of the time we were there.

Why is the idea "Pay it forward" important ?

The idea "Pay it forward" is important because it tells us to help other people and if the other person benefits from your help they will help more people then that person would help more people, ect. It also means that you can help around the house our your community without being asked and volunteer every once in a while.

Has your act of kindness made a difference ?

Yes I think we made a small difference at least !, because we helped the people in the kitchen so that the people that usually do that job can help other people so that they could prepare other food quicker and feed the homeless. Also that we helped make food for the homeless for me I think is helping the homemess people alot.

How I DESTOYED the aliens

When the aliens came to earth I was not ready to face them alone so I went to get my math textbook to send them back to their own planet by over loading them with math and telling them how i got it because they are afraid of math. So first when he approached my door I opened the window then jumped out he chased me down. Then with the textbook still in my arms he kidnapped me and put me in his little UFO ship. Then I heard him talking to his buddies that they will blow up the earth if I can answer and explain how i got the answer for 3 proportion question then he knocked me out with laughing gas. Then when I woke I saw he was busy eating some purple slime from a pot looking thing. So First I attacked him with my First Question !

Question 4 Page 67 !

4.Determine the unit rate
a) Three dinner rolls cost 99 cents.

To get the unit rate First you make a ratio table and write money on one side and dinner rolls then under them you put the amount like 0.99 for money and 3 for dinner rolls. Since its a unit unit rate we have to find the amount of money for 1 dinner roll. So then you divide the dinner rolls by 3 to get 1 dinner roll. If you do it to one side you have to do the same thing to the other so you divide 0.99 by 3 which will get you 0.33. So The unit rate is $0.33/roll.



b) Seven identical objects have a mass of 14 kg.

To find the unit rate first you make a ratio table, then on the top of one side write Kg then on the other side you write objects. Under them you write the amount, like 14 under kg and 7 under objects. Next you have to find the kg for 1 object, so to get 1 object you have to divide the amount by the same number so 7 divided by 7 equals 1. Since you did that to one side you must do it to the other side so 14 divided by 7 is 2 so that means the unit rate is 2 kg/object.



After I had attacked him with my first proportion question I told him to tell his aliens to call off the attack but he refused so I had no choose but to attack him !

Question 21 page 68 !
21. David can saw a log into 3 pieces in 7 minutes. If he continues sawing at a constant rate, how long will it take for him to saw a similiar log into 6 pieces ?
First you need to make a ratio table and at the top of the ratio table you put minutes on one side a pieces on the other. Then you put the amount under like 3 under pieces and 7 under minutes. Then to get 6 pieces you can multiply the pieces side by 2 because 2 x 3 = 6. If you do something to one side you have to do the same to the other side so 7 x 2 = 14. So the answer would be
"It will take him 14 minutes to saw the log into 6 pieces".



But guess what ! He still refused so now I have to use my secret weapon ! my last proportion question !
Question 28 Page 69 !

28. The dosage of a certain medicine for a child is 2.5 mL for each 3 kg mass of the child. What is the dose, in milliliters, for a child with a mass of 16.5 kg ?

This question is pretty tricky so first milliliters and mL are the same thing so you dont have to worry about that. Second to solve this question you make a ratio table with kg on one top side and on the other you write mL. Next under the words you put the amount like kg you put 3 and for mL you put 2.5. Then to find out the answer on one side for the 3 kg you divide it by 10 which gives you 0.3 then you multiply by 35 ( I know because i added up until i got to 16.5) then if you do it to one side then you have to do the same for the other 2.5 divided by 10 is 0.25 then you multiply by 35 which equals 8.75. So the answer is "The dose for a child with 16.6 kg is 8.75 mL"

After that last proportion question he surrendered and backed off and told his aliens to not vaporize the earth. So I told everyone what happened and they all think I'm crazy that a text book can harm an alien.

Alvin's Rate Growing Post

Part 1

Ratio - Compares parts of one group in the SAME units.
Rate - Compares 2 quantities in DIFFERENT units.

What is the difference between rate and ratio ?.
The difference is that ratio compares in the same units and rate compares in different units.

Question 4 on page 60.

4. Determine the unit rate in each situation.

a)An orca swims 110 km in 2 hours.

You can get the answer by first getting the ours to 1 hour for the unit rate. You do that buy dividing it by itself which in this case is 2, then you get 1. You do the same to the other side and you get 55. So the answer is the orca whale swims 55 km/h

b) A Canada goose flies 800 km in 12.5 hours.

Same thing as question a. You divide each side by 12.5 and you get 64 on the km and 1 in the hours. So that means a Canada goose flies 64 km / h.

c) Cathy plants 45 daffodils in 30 min.

This time instead of dividing we are gonna multiply since its 30 minutes and we want an hour. You multiply each side by 2. Which gets you the answer 90 daffodils/ h.

Question 10 on page 61.

10. Trevour rode his mountaion bike 84 km in 3 hours. Jillian rode her mountain bike 70 km in 2.5 hours. Who is the faster cyclist ?. How do you know ?.

First for Trevour you divide each side by 3 which then gives you 28 km / h.
Second for Jillian divide each side by 2.5 which gets you the same answer 28 km/ h.

They are both going the same speed because I did the work and both answers are the same which means they are both equally fast.

Coin question.

If there were 2740 nickles in 4 jars, then how many nickles will be in each jar ?.

You can get the answer by just dividing each side by 4. Then the answer would be that each jar has 685 nickels in it.

This recipe serves 4 people.

1) What would the recipe look if you had to serve 10 people ? Show your calculations.

Ground beef - 0.5 x 2.5 = 1.25 lb
Medium Onion diced - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5
Stalked celery finely diced - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5
Clove garlic minced - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5
Canned tomatos chopped - 14 oz x 2.5 = 35 oz
Canned tomato paste - 0.5 x 2.5 = 1.25
Parsley - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5 tsp
Basil - 1.5 x 2.5 = 3.75 tsp
Oregano - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5 tsp
Sugar - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5 tsp
Worcestershire Sauce - o.5 x 2.5 = 1.25 tsp
Seasoning Salt - o.5 x 2.5 = 1.25 tsp
Bay leaf - 1 x 2.5 = 2.5

What I did - All I did was multiply all the original numbers by 2.5 to get the answer !.

My 2 Part to Whole Ratios :


1) Blue to total 3:33

My 2 Part to Part to Part Ratios :

The Ratio I choose is Blue to Yellow :


Ratio Notation - Blue to Yellow is 3:4



Fraction - 3/4



Decimal - 0.75


Percent - 75%


How to make an equivalent Fraction :



Equivalent fraction is like another word for equal fractions. In my diagram here it shows that the original fraction the numerator is 3 and I multiplyed it by 2 to get 6, so whatever you do to the numerator you HAVE to do the same to the denomenator so I multiplyed the denomenator and I got 8 because the original was 4.

PROBLEMS !! :
1) What would the decimal, Fraction and percent be for yellow to blue ratio ?
2) What would the Orange to White to Black ratio be ?
3) Write the ratio for Orange to total then write it in lowest terms.
Some mistakes I got wrong on MY test were :
1) I forgot to write the answer in the lowest terms.
2) I didnt show my work.
3) I didnt get the write percentage.
Examples and my mistakes :
1) For question 3 I put D which was 2:4 which was wrong because I didnt do it in lowest terms, the answer was B 1:2.
2) For questions 17 and 18 I just wrote down the answer, I didnt show my work like how I got the answers.
3) For question 14 the way i got the percent was totally wrong the right way was alot more different.
How I can remember in Future Tests :
1) I can remember writing in the lowest terms by reasding the question more carefully.
2) I can remember showing my work by instead of doing my work on a scarp piece of paper I can just do it on my test paper.
3)For getting the percent I would use a ratio table to get the correct percent.
Problems :
1) In a student election Carol gets 40% of the votes. If there were 525 votes cast, how many votes did Carol get ?
2) 5 students were running for student council president. Of 100 students polled, 50 chose mike, 9 chose Patricia, 24 chose Brian, and the rest chose Karen. What is the ratio of votes for boys to girls in the student council election ? Express the raio in lowest terms.

QUESTION # 12
In a class of 32 there were 24 girls.
a) What is the boys to total students ratio ? Express the ratio as a fraction and percent.
The ratio is 8:32, boys : total students.
The fraction is 25/100
The percent is 25%
b) What is the girls to boy ratio? Use ratio notation to express the ratio
The ratio 24 to 8 can be written as 24 to 8, 24/8, and 24:8
QUESTION #13
A soccer team played 28 games and won 4 out of every 7 games. There were no tied games.
a) How many games did they lose ?
Since 7 can go into 28 four times then you could multiply 4 by 4 to get 16. 28 subtract 16 is 12 so that means they lost 6 games.
b) What was the team's win-loss ratio ? Explain how you got the answer.
The team's win ratio was 16:12 in lowest terms its 4:3.
I got the answer by taking the number of times they won and number of times they lost to make the ratio, I got it in lowest terms by dividing both numbers by 4 because they are both factors of 4.
c) If this trend continues, how many losses would you expect the team to have once they have won 20 games ?.
I would expect 15 losses because to get 20 wins you can multiply the lowest terms by 5 to get 20 so you can multiply the number of losses by 5 and you get 15.

1. How much money is in half the jar ?
Well since theres $100 dollars in the jar, you divide 100 by 2 which would equal 50.
So there would be $50 in half the jar.
2. What is the biggest coin ?
The biggest coin would be the quarter because the pennie, nickel, and dime are all smaller than the quarter which makes it the biggest coin.
How high are the stack of coins ?
Canadian coins
1 cent = 2mm
2mm x 100 = 200mm
5 cent = 3mm
3mm x 80 = 240mm
10 cent = 1mm
1mm x 100 = 100mm
25 cent = 2mm
2mm x 40 = 80mm
1 dollar = 3mm
3mm x 25 = 75mm
2 dollar = 3mm

Well since the jar is 3/4 full with 1350 american coins I think 370 canadian coins would fill 0.75 / 4 of the jar ( 15 % ).

The 3 things i know about graphing :





Here are a couple of different graphs I know :





Bar graphs - Bar graphs are best for comparing data across catergories.


Pictograph - Pictographs are best for comparing data and can easily be counted and represented by symbols.


Line graph - Line graphs are best for showing changes of data over time.


Circle graph - Circle graphs are good for comparing catergories using percents, the percents add up to 100%.


Double bar graph - Double Bar graph are best for comparing 2 sets of data across catergories.





Ways to mess with a graph :





-Make a break in the y-axis and mess with the intervals by going up by higher numbers or lower numbers.


-Make all of the bars skinny and make 1 bar big and fat so it pops out and catches your eye.


-Make all the bars the same size but colour 1 of the bars a different colour from all the other bars, for example all the bars are black and theres 1 bright pink bar.





Disadvantages of the graphs :





Bar graphs - The higher the intervals are the more inaccurate the number is.


Pictograph - You cant show exact numbers like 37 theyre more like showing numbers liek 10, 20, 30.


Line graph - It cant really show data very organized because its really plain and dosen't catch your attention.


Circle graph - You have to do lots of work to find the percent, you do lots of work to find the number if they just give you the percent and it cant show exact amounts.








What I could've done to improve my test :





I could've labeled my y-axis as "number of times rolled" instead of amount, I could've labeled my x-axis I could've put "The sums of the diced rolled". I could've predicted what would happen if I kept rolling for my paragraph in the first graph. I could've not start the bar on the y-axis like I did on my first graph.

Mr.Harbeck's / Mr.Bache's question why is 4/4 the same as 4÷4 ?

In my opinion I think they are both the same thing because 4 over 4 is also equal to one whole which equals 1, and 4÷4 is saying how many times can 4 go into 4 the answer is 1. So they are both equal to 1 so I think in my opinoin they are both the same thing.

For a Science Fair experiment, Mitchell measured the height of a plant every Monday for four weeks. He displayed the data in a line graph and a pictograph.


a)What information does each graph provide ?.

Each graph provides the height of the plant for four weeks. The line graph shows the height of each plant using lines, the pictograph shows the height of each plant using pictures (the leafs)
one leaf represents 20 cm.


b)Between which two weeks did the plant grow at the same rate ?.

The plant grew at the same rate between week 2 and week 3.


c)Between which two weeks did the plant change the most in height ?. Which graph shows this more clearly ?.

Between week 3 and week 4 the plant changed the most in height. Both graph shows the growth clearly.


d)Describe one advantage and one disadvantage of using each graph.

The advantage of the line graph is that it it can show data clearly because the intervals. The disadvantage is that it you cant find the exact amount.

The advantage of the pictograph is that it shows data that you can read easily because 1 picture represents a certain amount. The disadvantage is that it cant show exact amounts like 157 or 103.
